«Out In The Storm» ist Katie Crutchfields viertes Album als Waxahatchee und das zweite, das sie über Merge veröffentlicht. Wie es der Titel schon vermuten lässt erzählt Katie Crutchfield auf dem neuen Album von brisanten Situationen und wie man sie kontrolliert. Hierbei umarmt sie ihre Fehler und erkundet neue klangliche Freiheit.
«A running theme on the album is accepting your own imperfections that you’ve been trying really hard to hide», sagt Crutchfield. «Never Been Wrong» ist der Eröffnungssongs von Out In The Strom, bei dem Songtext ist Katie Crutchfield offen und direkt «You walk around like/ It’s your god – given right/ You love being right/ You’ve never been wrong.» Dabei lässt sie ihrer Wut, Traurigkeit und Verletzlichkeit freien Lauf: «Being straightforward has always been more natural for me, and it was incredibly cathartic», sagt sie und fügt hinzu, «It reminded me of being a teenager again, how I wrote songs then, and how huge that felt. It’s like that moment you walk away from a fight and you realize all of the things you should have said. This record is me saying all of that out loud alone as a personal practice. It’s sad and it’s angry, and I think being both at the same time proved to be a powerful motivation for me.»
Als ihr autobiografischstes und ehrlichstes Album bisher, ist «Out In The Storm» ein selbstreflektierter Anker ihres Songwritings und ihres Daseins als starke Frau.
«Out In The Storm» wurde bei Miner Street Recordings in Philadelphia mit John Agnello aufgenommen. John hat in den letzten 25 Jahren schon mit Grössen wie Dinosaur Jr. und Sonic Youth gearbeitet. Katie arbeitete fast den ganzen Dezember 2016 mit ihm zusammen. Mit im Studio waren dabei auch Katies Schwester Allison Crutchfield am Keyboard und an den Percussions, Katherine Simonetti am Bass, Ashley Arnwine am Schlagzeug und Tour- Gitarristin von Sleater Kinney, Katie Harkin, nahm ebenfalls als Lead-Gitarristin mit auf. Auf Agnellos Vorschlag hin wurde fast alles live eingespielt, um dem Album die Einheit der Band als Fundament zu geben und den Sound dadurch voller klingen zu lassen als auf den Vorgängeralben. Das Ergebnis ist das bisher am meisten von Gitarren angetriebene Album der Band.
